Online therapy shows effectiveness comparable to in-person therapy

Online psychotherapy is similarly effective to traditional in-person therapy for anxiety disorders, depression and trauma-related disorders. Dr. med. Daniel Zeiß emphasized this in his appearance on the “Psyche Today” podcast with Dr. Stephanie Grabhorn of the Blomenburg private clinics.
Clear scientific evidence
“Studies show that online psychotherapy is no worse than in-person therapy,” explains Dr. Zeiß. Especially for anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD and complex trauma-related disorders, the success rates are comparable. “It’s different, but not worse. You can still build relationships with people — and that’s ultimately what makes it so effective.”
Practical advantages for patients
“I don’t have to look for a parking space. I can simply create some space for myself, wherever I am,” says Dr. Zeiß. Continuity is particularly important: “We don’t have to take a four-week break in therapy. After such a break you simply start over again after one, two or three sessions.”
Legal clarification
An important development: “On January 23, 2025, the KBV determined, retroactively to January 1, 2025, that direct in-person doctor-patient contact is no longer a mandatory requirement for psychotherapy.” This creates new opportunities for patients nationwide.
High data protection standards
“We rely on the highest data protection standards with end-to-end encryption on our own servers in Germany,” emphasizes the psychotherapist, who, as a certified Linux administrator, places particular value on technical security.
Limits are respected
“In cases of acute suicidal thoughts or schizophrenia, online therapy is not the method of choice,” Dr. Zeiß clarifies. For most other psychological burdens, however, it is very well suited.
